F-14 Tomcat Pilot
A Naval Aviation Memoir
Strap In. Throttle Up
Take the Ride of a Lifetime
Are you ready to climb into the cockpit of the Navy’s most legendary jets, kick in the afterburners, and be catapulted off an aircraft carrier flight deck? Ready to punch holes in the sky in the F-4 Phantom, the F-14 Tomcat, and the F/A-18 Hornet?
From Cold War standoffs to combat over Iraq, Phil Grandfield’s memoir is a white-knuckle ride through the adrenaline-fueled world of naval aviation.
-
Strap in as this fighter pilot launches (and lands) from carriers across the Pacific, Arctic, Mediterranean, and Persian Gulf.
-
Experience the heat of Operation Southern Watch, the intensity of TOPGUN training, the complexity of weapons training in the high desert, and the split-second decisions of squadron and air wing command.
-
Feel the gut punch of 9/11 from inside the Pentagon and the weight of responsibility when every mission—and every sailor—counts.
Grandfield’s memoir isn’t just about flying—it’s about courage, command, and the sailors who risked everything to defend freedom.
With his more than a thousand carrier landings and thousands of hours logged in America’s most iconic fighters, Grandfield’s story blends breathtaking flight ops, global adventure, and the deeply human side of service and family sacrifice.
If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to land on a bucking carrier deck during an ink-black night, climb aboard. This seasoned son of a son of a sailor delivers a vivid, authentic, and exhilarating account of what it means to be up and ready on the flight deck.
“A riveting story of carrier aviation that puts you in the cockpit!”

Praise for F-14 Tomcat Pilot
"Captain Phil ‘Filthy’ Grandfield in his powerful memoir takes the reader back with him through twenty-five years of the rolling furball it takes to be a Navy TOPGUN. If you want a deeply personal first-person account of US Navy West Coast fighter aviation from 1979 until the attacks on 9/11, this is the best read you’ll find.”
